New Harmony High School

Architecture, Planning, Community Engagement
The XQ Super School Project offered $10 million over five years to winners of a competition focused on creating completely new and innovative designs for high school education. Concordia convened a winning team of dedicated educators and dreamers to compete. We proposed a school that would combine student-driven learning with the fundamental challenge of south Louisiana – increasing coastal degradation, ecosystem change, and the effort to protect and restore the coast. Our school concept, New Harmony High, is now up and running.

Our goal for New Harmony High is to create an environment for students to explore the connections between their individual interests, their local communities, and the world. New Harmony High aspires to be a game-changing public high school for the students of Louisiana that uses students’ passions, talents, and skills to address the very real challenge of costal change facing our state.

The long-term plan includes an educational barge that can bring students into the outdoor classroom of the coastal wetlands, and migrate upriver during storms, becoming a mobile model of resilience in an era of increasing storm strengths and damage-potential.
